World Influenza Conference 2024

Date: 06th – 07th July 2024
Location: Boao, Hainan, China

The World Influenza Conference (WIC) 2024, held from 6th to 7th July in Boao, Hainan, China, brought together a large number of healthcare professionals, including virologists, microbiologists, clinicians, researchers, and public health officials to share insights and developments in the field of respiratory infectious diseases. With almost 1,000 participants attending in person and almost 1,500 joining online, the conference was a pivotal event focused on advancing our understanding of influenza and respiratory disease control.

This year’s theme, “Integrated Prevention and Control: From Influenza to Respiratory Infectious Diseases,” provided a comprehensive look into the challenges and strategies involved in managing these diseases. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, from vaccine efficacy and surveillance to pandemic preparedness and the latest research on respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2.

A special note of thanks is owed to the organisations that made this conference possible. We are deeply grateful to work with the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), the China CDC, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS), and thank them for their exceptional efforts in organising this event.

We would also like to extend our deepest appreciation to the following esteemed experts supported by APACI, who contributed their knowledge and insights during the conference: Yuelong Shu, John Tam, David Smith, Lance Jennings, Sylvie Briand, David Hui, Michael Chan, Hitoshi Oshitani, Punnee Pitisuttithum, Leo Poon, Jessica Wong, Yi-Mo Deng, Fred Hayden, Janice Lo, Hui-Ling Yen, Joseph Bresee, Ivan Hung, Barbara Jones, Eve Lackritz, Vernon Lee, Arnold Monto, Sonja Olsen, Pasi Penttinen, Kanta Subbarao, Jonathan Suk, Tim Uyeki, Richard Webby, Maria Zambon, Wenqing Zhang, and Mark Jit. A special mention goes John Tam, Lance Jennings, David Smith, Leo Poon and David Hui for chairing the event over the course of the two days and facilitating valuable discussions.

APACI Directors, John Tam and Yuelong Shu, also chaired the round table discussion on improving clinical management and prevention for respiratory infections, experience gained from COVID-19 on future pandemic preparedness, and controlling avian influenza, which provided invaluable insights for shaping future strategies.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the organisations that supported WIC 2024: the International Society for Influenza and other Respiratory Virus Diseases (ISIRV), the European Scientific Working Group on Influenza (ESWI), the National Adult and Influenza Immunisation Summit (NAIIS), and the Middle East, Eurasia, and North Africa Influenza Stakeholders Network (ME’NA-ISSN). And a very big thanks to the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) for their continued support of APACI activities.

On the conclusion of the event, we take with us new knowledge and collaborations that will continue to inform public health initiatives in the years ahead. The World Influenza Conference 2024 has set the stage for further progress in the fight against respiratory diseases, and we look forward to the developments that will follow.

Thank you to all participants, organisers, and sponsors for making this event such a success. We hope to build on the discussions and ideas shared here as we continue to work towards better public health outcomes.
